THE TRUE FOURTH OF JULY FOR 2006

By Muhammad Nasser Bey

The theme of these years True Fourth Of July can be summed up in one word…IMPEACHMENT.

It is The considered opinion of this author, that it is more than a little likely that within a generation or two, the United States will cease to be a recognizable democracy.

So deep are the divisions of race and class and religion, so single minded our double-headed foreign policy towards oil and Israel, so obsessed with security and the false Piety of spreading democracy, so unyielding our war posture towards the world in general and the middle east in particular, that before the middle of this century, unless there is some great change in our collective thinking, the united states will collapse as a democratic society from the weight of imperial ambitions abroad and deep divisions at home.

And while you may say that the end of America has been foretold before, it is none the less true that America will know her demise more likely from within than without through the doctrines of hatred and disrespect which undergurd American attitudes to the "outsider" and those who are different.

One of the defining areas of the American experience from which we can draw clues to our impending future is quantonimo Bay.

Quantonimo Bay

The very emblem of our nation disgrace, gitmo as it has come to be know has been denounced by legal scholars, civil rights activist, clergymen, Our European allies, protestors around the globe and ordinary citizens here in the US.

Bearing all the marks of an illegal Gulag and legal black hole, the Gitmo facility is the product of small minded, arrogant men who felt them selves to be above the law. Worse, the Bush Administration felt that the special circumstances of 9/11 were a golden opportunity to thumb their noses at civil society and the rule of law.

The truth is THE RULE OF INTERNATONAL LAW EXTENDS EVERY WHERE, TO SECRET PRISONS, TO GIMO and TO THE OVAL OFFICE.

The June30th 2006 decision by the supreme court in opposition to the presidents Use of special rules for military tribunals is a blow against the creeping fascism of the Bush administration, even so the tribunals and quantonimo with their complete disregard for international law are but symptoms of a larger malady.

Article on Rendition Here

That is that the Bush administration is by all definitions of the word a Fascist Government, born from the vote like the fascism of the nazis and as much a creeping dictatorship as any government in 1930's Italy or Spain.

If you think the word fascism is too strong, then consider these tell tale signs of a fascist government. See if you recognize any of these points in America today!

As described by Dr. Lawrence Britt the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14-defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -

Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners including American citizens, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause -

The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, Jews, Blacks, Homosexuals etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military -

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism -

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media -
Sometimes the government directly controls the media, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security -
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are intertwined -
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

"It is the responsibility of...every evangelical Christian
...to get serious about re-electing President Bush."
Jerry Falwell, The New York Times, July 16, 2004

9. Corporate Power is Protected -

The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often is the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is suppressed -

Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -

Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -

Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -

Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and
Associates who appoint each other to government positions. They use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections -

Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

As of January 2004, the United States fulfills all fourteen points of fascism.

But we're not alone. Russia and Israel also fulfills all fourteen points as well. Welcome to the new republic, redefined, revised and spun.

As a result of the continuing divisions in America, America is more divided than it was on the eve of the civil war.
At that moment, the United States stood at the fulcrum of history, at point of transition from a slave holding nation to a nation more free, A time of hope if you like.

And yet the thinking, which gave rise to slavery- industrial complex, assumptions of superiority, displays of false piety and excuse of biblical justifications to cover the abuse of slavery continue. Gitmo it self has come out of the hellish thinking that gave us the slave-breaking barn and unrelentingly harsh treatment of the slaveholders of old.

The excuse that "these are new time and we need new rules"
To deal with terrorist is the same kind of morally bankrupt, southern thinking that justified slavery on the excuse that blacks were natural slaves and made inferior by God.

MISTRUST

Since the civil war, hope has been murdered in cradle repeatedly, and when allowed to escape it nursery, was later caught and killed by a thousand cuts later on.

Today, the grand, unifying experience of Americans seem to be not only racism but also mistrust. Everyone I know in some sense subscribes to the experience that there is some one, some major person or group of persons who are close to them that they cannot trust. This sense of mistrust of our loved ones and fellow men can often explain in part some of our most destructive behavior.

People don't trust their governments in societies where the population is more diverse, not all one racial or religious group. In Iraq today where we profess to bring democracy Suni is killing Shea, neighbor fears neighbor and mistrust and uncertainty are everywhere.

What ever was wrong in Iraq before America's invasion, it is now much worse.
It is not the resolve of the Iraqis to be free that I mistrust, but the intentions and objectives of the Bush administration.

In America we live in segregated neighborhood, go to segregated churches; our children go to segregated schools and know more about people on American idol than about the neighbors or co-workers. The immediate reasons for the divisions are different but only difference between Iraq and the US is size, we talk of the killings in Iraq and yet we kill each other in roughly the same numbers in America with injustice, guns and knives as are killed by the insurgents with machine guns and IED's.

We are a divided nation and such a nation is doomed.

Nations trust their spy satellites more then the councils in foreign nations, and with out trust, the fabric of society collapses.

RACISM

When in America we say "America", we invariably mean white America.
Race and class have always divided America, by income and status and by the dividing power of corruption and graft. And in this sense, America has never really been one country, but many smaller countries. Some more economically better off than others.

In Washington, the southernization of our national politics with our emphasis of religious themes in our treatment of women's issues, the continued marginalization of African Americas and the casting of our wars for oil as wars against terror signal a terminal phase in evolution as nation.

Other issues, taken as subsets, as symptoms of disease of national hubris and self interest include, but are not exclusive to:

SECRETCY

The nation that does not deal in the truth in its dealings with its people is doomed.

The un-checked powers of a rogue presidency, the rampant secrecy in the highest level of government over secret prisons, the justice department investigations, wire taps and monitoring of phone call by private citizens used as an excuse to protect the national security is in the end, taken together is a bankrupt policy for such a policy has damaged American credibility at home and abroad and lead to a slow undoing of American international and domestic security as peoples and nations such as those in South and central America decide to ignore American interest and protect themselves against it.

The secrecy of the bush is so all encompassing, so exclusive and so random that it begs the question, WHAT IS Bush Hiding, Aside from his personal incompetence that is.

Further more, who does Bush think is a citizen?
Does he think only those who are his base, his supporters are worthy to have their needs catered to. Does he think that the average American is only supposed to have observer status in our democracy, that all we should do is read the papers and vote and leave the rest to Bush and his secretive buddies, all behaving as if they are in their tree house, excluding the girls of the neighborhood?

As the number of and type of documents to be declared secret has increased it must be said aloud that the bush administration has undermined not only OUR right to know, but also the right to active participation in the exercise of our democracy and our freedom.

These are ground for impeachment!

Taxation with representation has been replaced by representation with participation!

Earlier this year, around the nation some of our citizens took the day off and made observation of the legacy of Dr King and Gave thanks in churches around the country.

But while many were relaxing and making thanks, our government continues to wage war and promote fear around the globe. A fear, which is fostering the very situations, WE now fear. While the white world fears for nukes in the hands of Iranians and the white man rattles the saber in Washington, men of cowardice continue to use the events of a post 9/11 world to undermine our freedoms here at home.

Our young men and women are being sacrificed in distant lands, to fight an undefined terrorism with questionable targets. Some of our people go to war willingly, some join the military to make money, never hoping or expecting to be in a war. Some of our young people join to get some glory, only to find that the glory got them!

THE ECONOMY

While the rich get richer and manufacturing jobs disappear into the global economy, Americas economic might is shrinking, like a balloon slowly loosing air, it is hard to see right away. But as the jobs that made America great disappear, the economy is feeding on itself; we now have a prison -industrial complex that is replacing our former industrial strength.

And those who are getting the jobs in these are the refugees from corporate America and our industrial heartlands.

And instead of building an economy based on manufacturing, we are building one based on low paying service jobs, prison related industries and the military, none of which is sustainable without accepting the loss of the middle class and creating a permanent underclass, none of which has to do with making America great or keeping us safe.

We are not safe in America from our own arrogance and collective stupidity.

Niether Black guys from the Hood, nor Osama stole the election in Florida in 2000, George Bush and his Jim Crow pals did!!

The Insurgency in Iraq

AMERICA DISBANDED THE ARMIE OF IRAQ, THROWING A MILLION ANGREY MEN IN TO THE STREET WITH NO HOPE OF WORK BUT PLENTY OF SKILLS TO KILL AND MAME.

Much of the violence in Iraq now is not just based on religion, but political, local groups wanting power and getting it through the barrel of a gun, they spread violence and clear the way through fear to ascend to power later on.
Just like the white, klan-terroists of the old south.

We make demands on the new Iraqi government to follow our lead and form a strong central government when the many cultural and tribal differences of the country would best be served by a Federated government of autonomous states governed by and a weak Federal government.

Do we see through the violence in the street of the cities in Iraq to the underlying causes? No. We continue to enforce our own American mandate; we go merrily on as if all will be well.

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION

Men will be tyrants given the change and George Bush is the worst president since Andrew Johnson. He has NOT asked what he can do for his country, but what can he do to it!

Our leaders are not leaders in the true sense, they neither leaders nor do they protect, since 9/11; no American has been victim of a terrorist attack unless they were in another country where such an attack took place. Our appointed guardians at homeland security are often unqualified associates of the president and his high paid political contributors.

Today our boarders are still like sieves, un-guardable without hundreds of thousands of person employed to do so, like wise our ports process tens of thousands of cargo containers, the vast majority of which go un-scrutinized for weapons, drugs or even stowaways.

We spend billions on a flexible army to fight elusive, irregular enemies who do not pose a military threat that our armies are designed to handle, thus many of the deaths in Iraq are from bombs, IED's and rpg's.

When it come to dealing with people and their ideas, their opposition to American foreign and domestic policies we are using a big sticks to swat small flies. When bin Ladin offered a truce, we officially ignored it because America had to have justice (vengeance). Now the only person in American prison for the crimes of 9/11 is a near-idiot who was in prison when 9/11 was committed.

SPREADING DEMOCRACY

The biggest problem with America is that it has only stood for freedom when white peoples freedom was at stake, in the colonies in the 1770's, In Europe in 1917 and 1918 and in Europe again in the 1940'S and then only after we were asked. Every where else, America has opposed true democracy

THE SOLUTION TO ALL THESE PROBLEMS BEGINS WITH IMPEACHMENT FOR HIGH CRIMES AND GROSS CORRUPTION OF DEMOCRACY, AND CONTINUES WITH A RADICAL REDUCTION IN ENTICEMENT TO BE CORRUPT WHILE IN GOVERNMENT.

Salaries for congressmen and senators should be no more than minimum wage or modest salaries. The inducements to serve should be not money but the honor of service to the people.

Like wise the healthcare and other perks should be no better than what the congress and senators are content that the rest of us should have.

The President is only a figurehead. Our problem is structural.
We are driving the wrong car, on the wrong side of the road. It's burning oil. The tires are bald and are leaking, the radio does not work and the air conditioner is blowing heat. The steering is loose. It's pulling to the right, it's rusting out and it's stolen. Changing the hood ornament wont help!

African Americans In Prison

Today African America is disappearing down a BLACK HOLE Of prisons, making up the majority of inmates in the federal penitentiary system. While whites make up the majority of the population, about 69%, African American make up only about 12%, yet we are jailed in the US to the tune of 44% of the national prison population. Most of these incarcerations are for drug use, while white American makes up the bulk of drug use in the nation, African Americans make up the bulk of those JAILED for drug use, WHY?

THE ARGUMENTS FOR IMPEACHMENT

As to the subject of impeachment, there are plenty of good reasons,

Constitution of the United States
Article II, Section 4

The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the
United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment
for and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes
and misdemeanors.

Bush should be impeached because:

1. He lied us into war in Iraq. According to the U.S. media-ignored British "Downing Street Memo," he "fixed" intelligence around a pre-determined policy of preemptive war. Results: 100,000 Iraqi civilian deaths; about 1800 U.S. soldiers dead in two wars, 100s of thousands wounded and traumatized.

2. Under his watch, the U.S. suffered its worst terrorist attack on its soil. He opposed an official investigation, and then stalled for months on testifying before a handpicked committee. Finally testified behind closed doors.

3. He was "elected" under dubious circumstances in 2000.

4. He was "elected" under dubious circumstances in 2004.

5. He has approved (and his Attorney General Gonzales has re-defined) torture at Guantonimo, Abu Ghraib, Bagram and elsewhere, while simultaneously opposing the International Criminal Court established to check such abuses.

According to Amnesty International, the United States has established a Soviet-style "gulag" of torture around the world.

6. He failed to support the Kyoto Protocols, reducing greenhouse gases, but worked to open up Alaska's ANWR to drilling-despoiling an eco-system and increasing greenhouse gases.

7. He chose Halliburton toady Dick Cheney to be his running mate-twice.

8. He has attempted to pack the courts with ideologue-judges intent on overthrowing Roe v. Wade, and institutionalizing the police-state abuses of Patriot Acts I and II.

9.His "No Child Left Behind" education policies have replaced learning with testing and allowed military recruiters access to our schools, cajoling our children with military options before their minds have had a chance to open, question and challenge.

10.He is attempting to dismantle the Social Security system that has ensured "peace and freedom" for tens of millions of working Americans for seven decades ("peace" of mind and "freedom" from economic crises)-- rights hard-won by Labor and Progressives in decades-long struggles.

11. He has allied himself with Right-wing ideologues to curtail or abolish stem-cell research vital to the conquest of debilitating and fatal diseases.

12. He has failed to develop a coherent energy policy-except to prosecute wars for other peoples' resources. He fails to acknowledge the reality and impending disasters of Global Warming.

13. He has continued the Globalization project of his predecessors: outsourcing jobs, hollowing out our middle class.

14. He has undermined the legitimate protective protocols of the C.I.A., politicizing the agency, awarding positions on the basis of ideological orthodoxy rather than merit and astute analysis.

15. He has subjugated his Administration to Neocon ideologues like Richard Perle, William Kristol and Douglas Feith; men who have endorsed the "settlement," expansionist and Wall-them-in policies of Ariel Sharon, sowing the seeds of anti-Arab racism, war and destruction in the Middle East for generations to come.

16. In spite of his rhetoric about freedom and democracy, he has allied himself with dictators in Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Egypt and elsewhere. He has increased the flow of arms to these states and others, fomenting instability, turmoil and war.

17. He chose Rumsfeld as DoD Secretary twice, in spite of Rumsfeld's obvious failure to adequately plan for the post-Saddam era in Iraq, inducing massive "collateral damage," the looting of ancient treasures, and infrastructure destruction in a country we were legally and morally bound to rehabilitate.

18. He endorses the weaponization of space, "Rods from Gods," and other exotic, Star-Wars technologies to establish a twenty-first century American global empire that is doomed to create an arms race with China and other opposing coalitions, sowing discord and wasting the resources of the world.

19. He has presided over the most egregious media consolidation in the nation's history. While we have had "yellow journalism" and other media abuses throughout our two centuries of Republic/Empire, we have never suffered the consolidation of power that we have today.

He has presided over the emasculation and cowering of PBS, while his disinformation troops have peddled fraudulent stories and comments to "reporters" like Judith Miller, Armstrong Williams and Jeff Guckert-"Gannon," poisoning the well of information, adding to the general confusion and Goebbelsization of our news.

20. He lied about, misled, or misunderstood the astronomical costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He continues to do so, diverting tax money for education, health care, the EPA, transportation and social infrastructure into war making and destruction.

21. He has continued and enlarged the depraved Clinton policy of using depleted uranium on the battlefield; a policy bound to cause massive suffering and death to Americans and others for generations to come.

22. He has alienated our traditional allies and more than a billion Muslims around the world. He has ransacked the good will extended to the nation after the 9/11 attacks, leading a crusade of vengeance and reprisal, most often against innocents, judging without sufficient evidence, arrogating to himself a crooked, self-righteous Texas sheriff's power to execute without justice.

23. Under his watch, millions more Americans have been added to the ranks of the uninsured while health-care costs have exploded. His answer to these and other pressing social problems appears to be faith-based charities-in other words, preaching to the choir while stealing from the pews.

24. Under his watch, the North Koreans have, apparently, developed eight nuclear weapons and Israel has continued to increase and refine its arsenal-now estimated as high as five hundred, all the while continuing its overreaching, reactionary and unproductive actions against the Palestinians.

25 .He lied to Congress and the American people to launch an illegal war of aggression

26.He set up a worldwide network of secret prisons, torture and assassinations.

27. He unleashed a massive unconstitutional wiretap and spying operation against the people of the United States.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Nuremberg trials, what is needed in the United States now is a new Nuremberg trial, with Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others in the Doc!

WE ARE TOLD WE MUST BUILD A BETTER MILITARY, BILLIONS WASTED ON THE WAR ON TERROR AND THERE IS MORE TERROR NOW IN IRAQ THAN THERE WAS BEFORE AMERICA INVADED.

Worse, now America rattles the saber at North Korea, a failed state that can just bearly feed it's population, America contunies to threaten the peace of the Globe
By making threats out of situatons that pose no immediate threat.

But still bush is called liberator.
Bush is no great man, were he not the son of a rich, white man he would be parking cars in west Texas.

Here a is a man, the grandson of a nazi sympathizer who was on his way to being a rich nobody until the corporate class decided they needed someone docile enough and stupid enough to do their dirty work for them.

A failed Business man, bailed out by his mommy and daddy, unqualified to be a great leader; this dry drunk, bush has substituted one obsession, alcohol, for another; bringing democracy to others. Bush has brought his ideas about democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan un-invited and all the while taking democracy from you and me.

Bush would no doubt like to be thought of as some sort of liberator, indeed
He has done some liberating; just not the sort people are given parades for.
He has liberated billions from the national treasury for his obsessive wars on terror.

He has liberated thousands of our soldiers of their health and welfare in a fool's errand in Iraq.

He has liberated more than 157000 Iraqi's of their lives!!

He has tried to liberate American from the rule of law under which Americans and freedom have thrived more and more over the decades.

Bush has squandered the good will of the world after 9/11 with gitmo, gulags and secret renditions.

Now we are in an open-ended war, a war that cost much in lives and treasure and promise nothing in return.

Getting the picture yet?

Were foreign powers to enter the United States and engage in the actions taken by the Bush administration, there would be warfare in the streets!!

There is one issue facing the American people, are we better off now than we were before Bush took office?

Fools in the service of their own egos, fears and ambitions do America to death. They think nothing of lies, self-deception and the embrace of dearly held bigotries. No sooner do terrorist strike America than suddenly we are in a new world, not just a new world of anti terrorism, but a new world of lawlessness and secrets and war and excuses for war.

And spinning us to war are political operators, lawyers, spin doctors, armchair warriors, appointees and policy wonks dreaming of everything from cheap oil to free tickets to the Mets game.

These back room dealers turn the criminal acts of a few terrorists in to an excuse for a global war on terror.

The machinations of men Like Chaney and Rumsfeld, behind the scenes, pushing for war, jockeying for influence and lusting for power are just the sort of people who will get us all killed! Are these men any better than the eye for an eye crowd that supports them. Good Christians all, turning that other cheek.

Vengeance for the Lord and sword for Gideon as we invade the Muslim world at the behest of the hardliners, weapons manufactures, Israel and the oil barons.

Until men have sleepless nights over the injustices committed in America and in her name around the world it is a certainty that similar crimes and injustices, be they against individuals or against the whole country will be visited upon us.The men in Washington are a disgrace, they has betrayed their manhood, they betray the tenants of good government, they have cost innocents in Iraq their lives, innocents in America as well and then wonder why America is the despised of the globe.

THE CALL MUST GO FORTH ON THIS FOURTH!

It is not too late to reverse this situation in America, but it will be soon. The first step is realizing it. The second step is getting involved. As the propaganda slogan disguising our current war goes, "Freedom isn't free." But our war for freedom isn't abroad; it's here at home.

Where ever you are if you thirst for freedom from tyranny and strive for democracy be it in Burma or Brooklyn, regardless of where you live, your are an American, you are an Athenian, you are the brother of Aung San Suu Kyi , the son of Nelson Mandela, the daughter of Harriet Tubmen, the protégée of Robert F. Kennedy, the student of Mary Mac loud Bethune or W.E.B Dubois, the kin of Mother Theresa, the child of Malcolm x or Martin Luther King.

More than that, you are the enemy of every small town policemen with chip on his shoulder, every corrupt politician, every pathetic bigot, every colluding businessman, every two bit District Attorney trying to make a name for them self by piling up convictions, Every petty tyrant, every Joe Stalin, every Franco, every Pol Pot and Hitler and yes, every George Bush. In your mind that questions every call for McCarthy style conformity, challenges every mongering of war dressed up as patriotism and piety, in your voice raised against tyranny, rings the True Chimes of freedom...let freedom ring.

No one will guard your liberty more fiercely than you will!

The True Fourth of July 2005

By Muhammad Nasser Bey
Mnbey@yahoo.com

I am an African-American, I live in a major city in the east of the nation, I have never waved a flag or sung the pledge of allegiance willingly even as a child and yet I am native born to this land, as American as any American! I am not celebrating anything. While most Americans are swept away on a carpet
of red, white and blues, dazzled by fire works and TV shows, speeches and public Pronouncements proclaiming our freedoms, My eyes have yet to see theglory that they now rejoice over.

In this years version of the True Fourth of July I will address what I consider to be the central issue of why America is threatened with loosing her freedoms one by one.

Put simply it is the continuing specter of American-style institutional racism, specifically something called "Whiteness". The concept of whiteness began in the, early colonial years of our country, before America was a nation. The idea,
grew from treating whites with deference and Blacks with Indifference to their, rights as human beings and even denying their status as human beings. Today in, our country this thing called whiteness pervades every level of society, manifesting itself in ways so numerous as to be part of our collective, unconsciousness.

This makes whiteness not just a problem of white Americans but of all American and as such must be addressed by us all. This thing called whiteness is a sociological and psychological construct and it is a primitive and racist function of political and economic Power. Whiteness is not the pursuit of all white persons.

But it is the pursuit of a status of a would be privileged class which is kin to wanting to be part of a winning team, of a winning CLASS, thus the privilege's of whiteness are often pursued not only by many whites but by non-whites too.

This explains in part why so many people voted for the Bush Ticket, overriding common sense and voting against their own long-term interests. Within the matrix of the concept of whiteness is the idea that everyone can be an aristocrat. Complete with their own guns and indoor pets, just like the European Aristocracy of old.

This Aristocracy showed it was wealthy enough to take into their homes other wise useless animals to support and powerful enough to have guns and flaunt them on hunting expeditions aswell as use them in the application of officially sanctioned violence.

More than 5 years ago the United States government began a restoration project on the declaration of independence and the bill of rights The declaration of Independence speaks of separation from an unjust government of England and the growing tyranny of King George.

We in American swear allegiance not to men and rulers and their need For control, but ideas written with an eye to the future where all may live according to their prescription for universal freedom. But this year as we remember the 40th anniversary of the March across The Edmund Pettus bridge and our nation observes another fourth of July, There is a shadow hanging over our heads.

It is the shadow of the wars, which we are now fighting, ostensibly to End global terror but in reality to gain greater control of oil, which will only increase our use of oil and our dependence upon it.

Untroubled by this vicious circle the Bush -oil Administration is conditioning the American people to accept perpetual war abroad and abuse of privacy and civil liberties at home.

In the political citadel of Washington D.C. there are men and women at This very hour who plan and plot and meet behind closed doors to pass laws and entrench policies which will have the net effect of undermining the hard won freedoms of our republic.

As more and more of our young men and women are fed into the meat Grinders of Iraq and Afghanistan at one end and the number of interested volunteers drops at the other end one must begin to ask, what is all this for.

Our Soldiers will enter into a fray of conflicting ideologies which Neither tanks nor planes, bullets or clamors can defend against.

I am not talking about the battles in the streets of Baghdad and Kabul I am speaking of the conflict between the increasingly polarized hard-liners of the Muslim World and those hard liners in the United States who are fueling this war by trying to make it in to some sort of Ersatz Crusade to bring democracy to the middle east.

On one side the American - Hard liners of the west with their narrow beliefs, certainty of their cause, obvious racial and religious overtones and a clear and present danger in their new boogieman, the Global Terrorist.

The term terrorist swings both ways.

Both sides have their extremes, the patriot act, narrow interpretations of the Koran and a pathological hatred of the other. Both sides, in the middle east and in the United states have their religious hard liners, both see the other side as the incarnation of evil.

Both sides have combatant groups, the ultra conservative Christians, conservative Jews and just plain old super rich folk in Washington and the hard-liners in the Mosques of the Islamic world have a black and white view of the world. Americans are not fighting global terror, we are fighting the same sort of extremists who have forced George Bush on the American people to use what became 9/11 as a spring board to the domination of the globe.

Like bully's that will not go away, these groups have to be stopped, if necessary by force, not just the Muslim hard liners but the one in Washington D.C. as well.

You might ask, why did John Carey not tell us all this, why did Vice President Gore not tell us this and pull out all the stops to stop Bush. It is simple, they are rich, white men too. They benefit from the collection of power in a few , white hands in Washington and were unable to see or think past the interests of the white man...not America or Americans but the white man, meaning the white aristocracy who's public face is the congress and the senate.

And like the old European Aristocracy of which the white man emulates, this American-Cousin aristocracy can not be toughed by sentimentalism, moralizing or sermonizing.

This glaring irony stands alone as one of the major indicators that we Are being led down the garden path by an administration who larger goals have nothing to do with securing our homes and fortunes and everything to do with pursuance of Agenda for a new "American Century".

To put more specifically an American Centered Century, one where the USA dominates world economic and political affairs. Not by out designing the worlds other mouse traps, not by out working other factory workers or out learning other societies but buy creating economic and social dislocation at home and out spending other nations on weapons and finding excuse to use them.

Now it is becoming apparent that it may become necessary to declare Independence from America itself, if the nation does not attempt to live out the true meaning of her creed. It is not much of a stretch to imagine a day when other nations that once silently supported the US in exchange of financial aid or protection from their enemies begin to openly oppose our foreign policies.

And down in Washington the moral leaders of the world hope and pray and cajole for the stasis that will never come. Despite all their growing influence the white, Christian conservatives feel powerless, mostly against a world of blacks and browns, but also against the rest of the nation that does not live in "red states of mind".

This feeling of acquired powerlessness, of innocence is not new, the White man in America has always considered himself a victim of someone else, thus justifying his brutality, as against blacks after the civil war, or against native peoples when they confronted the white man as he sought to destroy their way of live in the name of civilization.

Today in Washington our vaunted democracy is slowly transmuting-like a Bar of gold changing molecule by molecule in to lead into the Texas plutocracy. This plutocracy is now attempting to bring the entire nation under its negative influence by extending its values by force of a temporary majority rule in the senate to the whole nation and casting corporate greed, abuse of human rights and violation of international conventions as virtues.

And should the Bush conservatives succeed in filling every court bench With a conservative, succeed in having a majority rule vote on judges and succeed in pushing the envelope on the war on terror, they can expect a backlash from around the nation and the rest of the world. Such a backlash may take the place of growing distrust of America, growing dislike of Americans, "even if they do bring money on their vacations", disinterest in her exports and a deaf ear turned to her concerns.

Nations around the globe like India and China and the nations of the African Union together have more than half the world's population. Populations, which are getting Better educated, more mobile, better informed and more politically sophisticated every day! They are using the Internet, watching Satellite television and becoming more aware of American actions against people of color every day.

What is America teaching these people by her examples in Middle East and elsewhere? We are helping to foster the monsters we fear the most.

In time the harvest of ill feeling toward America may mount up more Damage than will a month of 9/11's. The United States could find itself courteously isolated from its friends and unable to do much about its enemies.

With all of America's power it is now clear that the problems America Faces internally are the Worlds problems.

Such is the reach and grasp of the USA that the world cannot endure A culture of violence that thinks war and ware fare are the solutions to its problems.

As for the Christian values of George Bush and his conservative foot solders, let me say this. There is something about their attempts at power grab in the senate, the outsourcing of detentions at Guantanamo bay and use of the courts to serve the rich and create a permanent underclass that is very unchristian.

Put simply, people in America need to wake up, stop watching survivor And listening to these conservative sock puppets on the radio and Sunday morning talk shows and start thinking for them selves, or they will find them selves trying to survive in America before long.

It is my hope and the intention of others that the world bodies like The world court should be venues for addressing the threat to world peace that America now represents.

And here in America we have to address our grievances to the real oppressors. George Bush is nothing, he is a puppet, he is dead. He has no political life that other do not put in to him, he says nothing others do not want him to say, even his handlers like Carl Rove are not the power behind the throne. Such men are just hired hands, brought in to paint the puppets face and put close on this dummy to make him presentable. Like Knucklehead Smith or Mr. Bluster.

If you want to know who is running America, ask, who is benefiting from The things bush is trying to do and you will have your answer.

And While the white man is cultivating fear of the rest of the world in America, people in Bangalor, Beijing and Bangkok are studying to take our jobs. And while other nations are building school houses and investing in their populations as in Singapore, America has a million black men in prison, untrained, ill-used, and hated. And many tens of thousand more in prison, we are engaging in internal imperialism.

This is the politics of irrationality.

It used to be that all America had to do was show up on time to win the loving cup, to be the best in any international competition, not so any more, while other nations are learning English, pushing math and Science and acting like American used to act, with a desire to succeed-not just win, some of us in America are determined to make our victories on battlefields.

We teach religious doctrine in our schools, fight over religious and historical content of our text books, wage wars against our convenient enemies for oil with a passing interest in exporting democracy. Until the American people take back the American dream from the scoundrels in Washington, it will be a truism that our best days are behind us.

The restoration of the documents of the founding of our nation took 5 years or more, less care is taken with the ideas these documents contain regarding the abuses of unchecked power.

In less time than it took to write these documents or preserve them, we could loose our birthrights, crushed under the weight of the new despotism of the have's and the have mores, which George Bush claims as his base

Since the founding of the nation the white man has increasingly seen him as the budding aristocrat and through the prism of a double narrative of the victim and the hero, as my dear Friend, Terry Herd explained it to me.

The central problem with the American republic is the confluence of the self-deception of the white man as hero, bringing democracy to the world and so forth and the idea the white man seeing every thing in black and white.

As George Bush himself said, either you are with us or you are with the terrorist. This all or nothing scenario is at the heart or race relations in America and foreign policy in Washington. At the center of racism is fear, and when you are afraid of something you want to destroy it, this explains much of why the United States has stirred up crisis's over nuclear weapons with Iran and Korea.

This dual idea explains why people of color, particularly African Americans are considered objects to be feared, avoided and jailed when ever possible. It explains why the white man has fought so viscously for decades to hold power in HIS hands in America.

It explains in part why the white man went out of his way to create a "Southern way of life" which is a nice euphemism for an entire society based on the oppression of African Americans for 300 years.

Followed by an additional 100 years of disenfranchisement in order not to simple keep the "NSˇers" down, but to RAISE the whiteman up in his own eyes and the eyes of the world. Particularly the eyes of Old Europe as George Bush called it. The southern hick with his hood and shotgun are in the whitehouse now.

The white man of whom I speak is not all white men, but the ideologue Who considers himself above his fellow Americans because of his gender and skin color.

He dances but has no Grace, he has culture but he is not cultured, he reads no poetry, his knowledge of history is selective at best, he is neither thinker nor philospher, his bow tie and silk pants do not fit. But he has a gun and for him, that's all he needs.

The white man in Washington styles himself some sort of deliverer of peace when in fact he is nothing of the sort. For example, the money we give to aid peoples in Africa is only a fraction of the amount African nations loose or cannot earn because of the heavy tariffs America places on their finished goods.

It is this central belief in him self as some sort of deliverer of global peace Which explains in part why the white man in America thinks he can attempt to dominate the world, it is not his belief that the common man can rule him self, but that an arms holding elite, a democratic aristocracy should hold and use real power.

This is why Martin Luther King was killed, he threatened to create a TRUE moral, parallel leadership aristocracy and had to be stopped so that the false virtues of the white man could be focused on. This is why might makes right for the white man and this is why the white man is not fighting a Euro-centric cold war but fighting with everyone else; in the name of freedom of course.

I mean what else is he going to go in to Iraq or Afghanistan for but to bring democracy. Link to photo

As for the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan let me say this, the Iraq invasion was based on WMD which were Never There. This meanS that either the entire intelligence apparatus did not know what it was doing or the government lied .

Which do you think is true?

Also, suppose the bombers and highjackers of 9/11 had been white men from Europe, say England or France. Do you think we would have invaded these country's at all, do you think American tanks would have rolled through Piccadilly Circus as they Did Downtown Baghd ?

Dr. Rice, during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, vowed to use diplomacy to address "the threats to our common security" and to "spread freedom and democracy throughout the globe."

She might do better to focus on the "homeland" first. While the Marlboro Man kicks butt in Baghdad and G.I Jerk sits in the white house America pursues democracy over seas parallel to rich oil deposits. In this country Americans have placards snatched from their hands when the president is near and voting machines in Florida and other strong holds of the democratic party don't always work.

Barricade are thrown up for his protection from those he is supposed to serve. The President is a great merchant of words of freedom, but the words do not fit in his mouth.

He often twists words and ideas to mean one thing when they should mean another. He will say, support our troops when he means support MY war! I support our troops, but not his wars, neither his Taunnyesque treatment of prisoners in Cuba

It is common for the nay sayers who criticize my examination of the history of America by to wax philosophical and say that we are better off in America than were we in Africa, to this I simply no. ( link to exploitation of Africa) Had there been no transatlantic salve trade, had I been born with my birth-right, my identity, my destiny all intact I would agree with such musings.

With only one new black male in the senate and he being acceptable to his constituency in part because he is half white at that, it is clear that African Americans are going to be left out of the Nation decision making process for some time.

In short, African Americans have citizen ship, jobs, homes and buying power, some political power at the local level and that is all. The real power remains firmly in the hands of 500 white, male, multi-millionaires in the nation's capital and those who support and control them.

Therefore, since there are no more national leaders of standing who can stand by them selves and lead a movement in the manner of a King Or Malcolm X, African Americans must move beyond the Church, beyond the lone protests in front of the statehouse or the police station the and move the international stage. To link arms with the oppressed of the globe and bring our grievances to the attention of the world.

We live in the 21st century, the global community is here, it must be the strategy of the Black Man and Women to make the problems of African America the world's problems. Sine the United States considers it self a global power, indeed a global authority, it must be made to yield to the opinions of the world it seeks to engage in the guises of leader. As with France with it's "Global France" propaganda of 60 years ago, now the US offers a "Pax Americana" and a New American Century, both of which are benign enough on the surface but represent a refutation of the ideas of free peoples.

The True Forth of July will not dawn for my people nor for America as a whole until the sins of racism and bigotry is washed away, apology and compensation made to the descendants of American slave holding and Jim crow and until the nation as a whole, not just her government stays their hand from domestic and global racism.

Until then there is nothing to celebrate as a nation but the swelling vanity of a short sighted and small minded people.

My original concerns still stand, what I believe is that America is intolerant of the demand for full participation by minority groups in general and by African Americans in particular. The deliberate removal from the voting roles and subsequent labeling of persons in Florida as felons during the 2000 election, many of them African Americans is a prime example of my argument.

That there be a frank discussion of issues of fundamental, entrenched bigotry's so pervasive as to be invisible, so invisible as to be pervasive, be put on the table and discussed not with rancor and fist shaking but with an epic calm.

Because we are a nation of schemers, go-getters, rugged individualists and hustlers we are often unable to work together as a nation until there is a crisis and than we usually work against our own interests, we point fingers at one another , blame someone else, blame the poor, the Italians, the Germans or the Japanese as we did in the second world war.

In the south the white man blamed the black man for his troubles after the civil war, resulting in 100 years of disenfranchisement, the economic and cultural equivalent of placing a 100 pound mill stone around a mans neck and then expecting him to run a foot race uphill.

The happy inheritors of this legacy can be found today in the mean spirited, money motivated politics of the ultra-right wing of the republican party. Their hoods replaced with dark , blue suites.

To be sure there are those on Capital hill who endeaver to do the right things, to promote democracy, to protect human rights at home and abroad but their are too few of them.

It is also a given that the Republicans more than the deocrats have simply come out of the closet all together and now stand for nothing more than the needs and desires of the rich and the super rich!

The truest test of what kind of nation we are is what Kind of nation we leave our children.

One Year ago, on the Fourth of July 2004 I published this article on the internet resulting in some debate on my comments about our values as a people, on the meaning of the fourth of July in the United States and it's deeper meaning.

Every year for the rest of my life this article shall be published anew with additional commentary about the state of race relations and justice in the United States. Until the United States scrubs it self clean of the stench of Racism,
Oppression and injustice in all of its contrived forms, this discourse shall go on and on ...and on.

The True Fourth of July for 2004

Stono2
Originally uploaded by mnbey1.

Forty years ago this week President Johnson, a southerner, signed into law the Civil rights Bill of 1964 despite the filibustering of white, southern racists.

Within four years the most celebrated civil rights leaders and social reformers of the 20th century, Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Robert Kennedy would be
assassinated. Men who had not fire a shot in anger.

On this 4th of July night the nation is engaged in a frenzy of merry making ,
celebrations, parties and thanksgiving over that most blessed gift, Human freedom and dignity. But this evening as the fireworks fill the skies over our cities and citizens nation wide eat their barbecue not all Americans are celebrating.

I am an African-American, I live in a major city in the east of the nation, I have
never waved a flag or sung the pledge of allegiance willingly even as a child and yet I am native born to this land, as American as any American!

I am not celebrating anything. While most Americans are swept away on a carpet
of red, white and blues, dazzled by fire work and TV shows, speeches and public
pronouncements proclaiming our freedom, My eyes have yet to see the glory that
they now rejoice over.

On Television there are programs showing immigrants talking about how happy
they are to be Americans, that’s fine, but in America tonight there are those like my self who burn not fire crackers but a light in our windows in the hope that justice will find us.

In the nation tonight a million are in American jails, many of them the African
Americans who could never look up at the statue of liberty like some grateful roman freedman and say thank you for your gift to me, we acknowledge that things have improved but they have not improved enough and in some ways the situation is worse, made worse by the current presidency of George bush and his crime family.

Slaves for 200 years in America, disenfranchised for a further 100 from the end of
the civil war to 1964 and made to fight the civil rights movement over and over
again with each new generation of conservative, southern racist in Washington and local politics we the despised of this guilty nation can not look on any period of American history and say "those where the good old days".

NO it is not the forth of July for all of us, no matter how much you would ignore
my words or drown me out with Suez’s band music, the burning truth is that
America has not lived up to it's creed for all citizens and does not plan to.

Last Year in Philadelphia the city fathers have opened to the public a new Constitution center. Lost in this dedication is the sad fact that this new showcase of the constitution was built on top of a grave yard of African slaves!

The irony of this is lost on no one who knows about!
Even now the insult is added to by still another injury to the collective dignity of my people and fewer than 1 person in 10,000 in America is even aware of it.
It's not the sort of thing you talk about while engaging in a festival of self-
congratulations.

America can kill Malcolm X, assassinate Martin Luther King, send cops to murder
Fred Hampton in his bed, or shoot Robert F. Kennedy in a hallway , but you can
not kill their message, nor make us forget their example. These men never fired
a shot in anger but were silenced because they dared to try to make America a place of equality. Instead America continues to be ruled not by a true rule of law but by a wealthy elite who support George Bush and his cronies in Texas and Saudi Arabia.

America is becoming a place were moral bankruptcy was a kind of religion, were
corruption at the highest levels IS the order of the day and the ignorant mob is kept is a perpetual state of alarm over r the threat of mostly non-existent terrorist threats.

In George Orwells book 1984, the writer speaks of a process where the wars a nation fight are not meant to cease but to go on year in, year out, decade in , decade out for the sole purpose of maintaining the status quo. George Bush call him self a war president, the real term is "war-time president, meaning a president during a time of war. No president is in office to wage war but to wage civilization. The point is that while war is furthered poverty grows, while our court system become macabre finance companies for the states, squeezing the poor and indigent of Moines in the form of parole fees and court fee, justice go wanting. True Justice is NOT justice at someone else’s expense.

Our nation locks up and locks down millions but the broader justice remains elusive, a justice where those responsible for creating or perpetuating condition in which crime a corruption flourish remain unpunished. An awareness of the Larger Injustices of our nation is what is needed now.

Still, there will be those who say America, love or leave it or go even further as many have and say "go back to Africa" or where ever, but those are the cries of small, frightened men clinging to their fears, Afraid that THEY may have to change in order for America to become America.

It is a necessary thing to criticize America for her short comings without
loosing faith in her essential potential to go beyond being a nation of hucksters,
hustlers ,snake oil sales men, casual or institutional racists or crime families
committed to making their lives better at someone else’s expense.

This thread of "take what you can-when you can-from whom you can" runs
through our entire history as Americans and explains much of our conduct as a nation , from the wanton holding of slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries, to the support of dictators for oil and strategic metals today.

2000 years ago there was an idea that was Rome, a place where men and women fought and died for the idea that people could live together in peace and equality.

Rome's true self was lost to greed and corruption often masked by displays of
ceremony and grandeur to keep the population miss directed. It is still the same
today in Washington were men speak words they have not written to selected crowds in staged media events, they talk a kind of word speak where they use hot button terms to get people fired up to do their bidding on issues which are used merely to disguise their intents to covet what the world has in the name of democracy. Don’t think for a moment that the elite care about you because your white or a veteran, they need you and you are expendable.

We in America claim to be the inheritors of that once great republican idea that undergurded the foundations of Rome, the question now is, is that idea worth working toward. I say that it is .

But the quest for the True forth of July in the True America must begin with mutual respect for one another, for the truth and for our collective right to live a better, more meaningful life, not just a life with more or bigger possessions .

My original concerns still stand, what I believe is that America is intolerant of the
demand for full participation by minority groups in general and by African
Americans in particular. The deliberate removal from the voting roles and
subsequent labeling of persons in Florida as felons during the 2000 election, many
of them African Americans is a prime example of my argument.

That there be a frank discussion of issues of fundamental, entrenched bigotry’s so
pervasive as to be invisible, so invisible as to be pervasive, be put on the table and
discussed not with rancor and fist shaking but with an epic calm.

Because we are a nation of schemers, go-getters, rugged individualists and hustlers
we are often unable to work together as a nation until there is a crisis and than we
usually work against our own interests, we point fingers at one another , blame
someone else, blame the poor, the Italians, the Germans or the Japanese as we did in the second world war. In the south the white man blamed the black man for his
troubles after the civil war, resulting in 100 years of disenfranchisement, the
economic and cultural equivalent of placing a 100 pound mill stone around a mans
neck and then expecting him to run a foot race uphill.

The happy inheritors of this legacy can be found today in the mean spirited, money motivated politics of the ultra-right wing of the republican party. Their hoods replaced with dark , blue suites.

As for reparations the discussions of reparations cannot begin with questions of money, the issue is not about money and it is an insult to suggest that it is. The
question of reparations is a multi-dimensional pursuit to become who we can become as a nation. Within those dimensions is the question of admitting of the facts, that these things did happen and their result is still with us today.
Only then can the nation purge itself of guilt for its crimes, disgorge itself of racism and begin the true healing process, a process which will take many years if not decades to complete. The true forth of July is then something which we living now should not hope to celebrate but hope that our children shall, for when the day spoke of in this text does dawn it will be the forth of July not just for America but for the world, no matter what date it falls on...
